A day in Playa del Carmen

The last 24 hours in Mexico. Our flight left the next day in the morning from Cancun, so we decided to spend the last night, which we didn't have in advance, in Playa del Carmen. This city is one of the most tourist of the Riviera Maya, but it is only an hour from the Cancun airport by bus. We booked a room in the phone Hacienda Paradise hotel, a four star that had very good reviews on Tripadvisor and left us the double room without breakfast for 850 pesos (€ 51) after a little haggling.

We got up not too soon and went for a leisurely stroll along the beach of our hotel in Tulum. It was a little sunny, but the wind was blowing so much that it dragged water and sand at the same time, causing the glasses to fill with sand in a matter of seconds.

We were leaving Tulum and time had given us no respite. Perhaps if we had more sun and less wind, we would not have been left with that bittersweet feeling. I did not like Tulum. I thought it was expensive, too posh for my taste, although perhaps that says more about me than anything else: I feel more comfortable in a cabin lost in the middle of the jungle than in an eco-chic hotel on the beachfront.

We asked Stefano to prepare the account for him. check out. We only had to pay the restaurant bill in cash, because the room had already been paid before Travel to Mexico. When he told us that we were going to Playa del Carmen, he began to pest:

-Playa del Carmen is a bad imitation of Ibiza, why do you stay here better?
- (At $ 150 a night with nothing included? I don't think so). We stayed there to be closer to the airport.
-You can stay here and go by taxi.
- (...) We already have the hotel booked ...

From Tulum to the Cancun airport you can go by bus. It takes two hours and costs 160 pesos (€ 9.60). The problem is that the schedules are scarce and to get to the airport with time we had to go on the 3.55 am bus, that is, we discarded it without hesitation.

As usual, those last days we went to Charlie's for breakfast (at that rate they were going to make us customers of the month). I decided to give myself a little lujito and ordered pancakes with bananas, which seemed to sit well. Soon, a second bus arrived from the Mayab company and we started. On the road between Tulum and Playa del Carmen you can only see the entrances to the hotel complexes that flood this entire Caribbean area.

In just over an hour we arrived at Playa del Carmen. The bus station is on the very 5th Avenue, the nerve center of this city that barely existed 15 years ago. When we got off the bus, a breath of hot air stunned us: we were finally waiting for a day of sun and heat in the Riviera Maya. We dragged our bags until we reached our hotel. Certainly, seeing the situation on the map we imagine it would be closer, but it took us about 20 minutes to arrive.
