Last year for Holy Week I was able to realize one of my greatest illusions: visit the Jerte Valley during cherry blossom. As you know, I am passionate about Japan and there the hanami (cherry blossoms) is one of the most famous festivities. Luckily, in Spain we can live something similar in Estremadura.
He Jerte Valley It is in northeastern Extremadura and currently consists of eleven municipalities. To access the Jerte Valley from Barcelona, we travel by plane to Madrid and there we rent a car. In just over three hours we reach the first village in the valley.
When do the cherry blossoms of the Jerte Valley bloom?
The date of flowering of the cherry tree varies every year, but usually begins between the second half of March and until the beginning of April, and lasts approximately 10 days. It should be borne in mind that not all cherry trees bloom at once in the valley; those in lower areas bloom a little later than those in higher areas. A good way to plan the visit is to consult the website of Jerte Valley Tourism, where they report daily on the progress of flowering and what areas are in bloom at that time.
Where to see the cherry blossoms?
In the Jerte Valley you can follow two routes by car to see the cherry trees. We made the route that follows the national road 110 and we visit in the following sense the port of Tornavacas and then the towns of Tornavacas, Jerte, Cabezuela del Valle and Navaconcejo. Another route would be the drive through the mountains, which runs through the towns of Rebollar, El Torno, Casas del Castañar, Cabrero, Barrado, Piornal and Valdastillas. We did not do the latter because we did not get accommodation in the valley, so we finally went to sleep the same day at Merida, to my parents' house.
