This August, like last year, I took a week to go to REST the town of my parents in Extremadura. Puebla de la Calzada is located just over 30 kilometers from Mérida and one morning we took the opportunity to make a quick visit to the city.
Emerita Augusta was founded by Emperor Augustus in 25 BC and thanks to its situation it soon became the capital of the Lusitania (one of the three provinces of Roman Hispania). That importance has left a great archeological legacy that in 1993 was declared a world heritage site. We only had a few hours before the heat tightened to visit the city, so we went to see what was important.Merida Theater
We start by visiting the Roman theater (for more information visit the web). The truth is that the entrance is a bit expensive, the entrance to the theater and the amphitheater is worth 7 euros and the joint entrance for all the monuments 10 euros. As we didn't have much time, we only bought the theater.Mérida Amphitheater.
The theater is very well preserved and in fact in summer the Merida Classic Theater Festival is celebrated. Last year we went to see Oedipus king and we must recognize that it is impressive to see the work in such an enclosure although two tips: 1. Wear warm clothes because at night outdoors it is very cold and 2. Buy good tickets or take a cushion, because spending 3 hours sitting on an irregular rock is not very comfortable.Arches in the Roman amphitheater of Merida
Although the theater is very well preserved, the Amphitheater has suffered more over time and the poor is a bit dusty.
